How To Give Your Water a Flavor Boost

Do you drink too much soda or maybe your kids won’t drink milk unless it is chocolate?

Number 4 on my pediatrician’s recommendations was limiting sweetened drinks to ZERO (to see the full list visit my previous post here).

I will be honest, I grew up in a home where on special occasions I got to split a can of soda with my sister but other than that we didn’t really drink sugary drinks and so this has never been a major issue in my family.  I understand however that is not how it is for everyone.

Sugar addiction is a real thing and it can be extremely hard to overcome, from whstockvault-coffee-heart-art143865at I understand.  We want to set up our kids for success and I do believe in the 90/10 rule (eat the best you can 90% of the time so you can indulge 10% of the time) So on special occasions enjoy a nice cold sugary drink.  I really encourage you to try limiting your consumption and theirs the rest of the time, though.

If your kid(s) have to have chocolate milk try to gradually “water down” the milk by adding more regular milk then chocolate until they don’t need the chocolate anymore.  You can do the same with fruit juice, just add water and gradually increase the water to juice ratio.

I really love flavoring my water so I still feel like I am getting something special, sweet and refreshing wstockvault-cocktail-121598ithout the extra sugar.  These are some of my favorite combinations and directions.

First, put the fruits, vegetable and herbs in a 2-quart pitcher. You can use a wooden spoon to mash the fruit and herbs a little if you would like but it isn’t a requirement.  Fill the pitcher with water and let it sit overnight in the fridge to get the best, strongest flavor.  Then you can enjoy it all the following day.

Flavor combinations:

  1. Apples sliced thinly with whole cinnamon sticks.
  2. Raspberries (fresh or frozen) with lime or lemons that are either sliced thinly or quartered.  If you quarter them I would recommend squeezing them a little in the water.
  3. Pineapple sliced or chopped with fresh mint leaves.
  4. Watermelon with fresh rosemary sprigs
  5. Cucumber and lemon sliced thinly with mint leaves and fresh grated ginger.

You can really use as little or as much fruit as you like to adjust how “strong” the flavor is.  If you are using good fresh herbs you probably won’t need to use a lot because they can be very fragrant and you don’t want to overpower it with herbs.
