Self Care Tips & Recipes

Now that Christmas is behind us we can take a breath and spend some time on self-care.

We have been running ragged (or at least I have) to get everything done for the holidays ~ shopping, wrapping gifts, going to holiday recitals or programs, parties, cookie exchanges, visiting family and friends, the list goes on and on, right?

I have a few beauty remedies to share with you to help rejuvenate your hair and skin and maybe help with what I lovingly call “stress marks” (also known as pimples :D).

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil works great as a lotion, makeup remover, chapstick replacement, and it even helps damaged or frizzy hair.  Below is a recipe I found in Redbook last year that makes a great mask for damaged hair and uses both coconut oil & avocado.

Add the following into a blender and blend until smooth:Avocado Hair Mask

  • 1/2 avocado
  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 cup mango (cut into cubes)
  • 1/2 banana

While your hair is dry apply the mix from your roots to your ends (if you have really fine hair I would skip your roots or apply sparingly).  Let it set for 15 minutes you can use a shower cap if you have long hair and need to keep it out of your way.  Then you rinse the mask off and shower and condition as you normally would.

Avocado Hair Mask 2My daughter has naturally curly fine hair.  The crown of her head is a little rats nest each morning and we have found that applying this hair mask on a semi-regular basis helps keep that more manageable.

Ginger Root

Works wonders on “stress marks” or pimples.  You just cut your ginger root so you have a fresh piece exposed and gently massage the soft interior part of the root onto any place that you are either prone to pimples or if you feel one coming on.  Rub it for a good while, maybe about 5 minutes.  It helps unclog pores and kill acne-causing bacteria.  What is nice about this is it doesn’t dry our your skin like other types of treatments can.

Yogurt & Milk

Yogurt and milk can help soothe your skin also. And is great this time of year if you have been busy with winter sports and maybe have a windburn or sunburn.  Take whole yogurt (not low fat) and spread a thick layer on your windburned skin, keep it on for about 15 minutes before you rinse it off.

You can also soak a washcloth in a bowl of ice-cold whole milk (again it needs to have the fat of whole milk, not skim, 1 or 2%) and drape it over your sunburn until the washcloth warms up and is close to room temperature.  Both remedies should help with the pain and redness of a windburn or sunburn.

    I have done coconut oil on my hair before but haven’t tried the other stuff. I am thinking giving it a try is a good idea.

      That is funny. I have not tried just plain coconut oil in my hair, I have always combined it with other things. I am curious how it compares. I hope you like it!
